Internet Troubleshoot & Causes of Slow Speed

Power Cycle the modem

Before contacting Manawa Telephone for modem connectivity help, try performing the following steps to see if your issue will resolve. The modem pictured is just an example. The steps listed should work correctly for all modem types.

1. First, make sure your computer is turned completely off.
2. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the cable modem or from the electrical power source/outlet.  Make sure you are unplugging the modem power cord and not the round coaxial cable that has a threaded screw tip.
   
   
3. Disconnect the power from the router. If you do not have a router, disregard this step & continue to step 4.
4. After waiting approximately 30 seconds, reconnect the power to the cable modem.
5. Wait another minute to allow the modem to acquire a signal or reconnect.
6. Reconnect the power to the router. If you do not have a router, disregard this step and continue to step 7. Then restart your computer.  
7. The modem connection light will be solid.
8. Attempt to surf to two web pages to verify good connectivity.

What slows down my High Speed Internet?

There are a variety of factors that can cause the connection speed you experience to fluctuate, such as:

-Your computer configuration. This depends greatly upon how much RAM (memory) your PC has. If your PC is running slow it may need more RAM.

-Congestion on the Network or Internet.

-The condition of telephone wiring inside and/or outside your service location. If you pick up your telephone and hear static or any kind of noise on the line, this will affect your Internet connection.

-The distance of your telephone line from your Internet Service Provider's serving central office. The further away from the serving central office you are located, the less likely you'll attain the highest DSL speed.

  -The server and router speeds of Web sites you access. Each web site you visit has a different speed connection to the Internet. Some sites will take longer to load than others due to their slow access.

- Also, if there are a large number of people connecting to the same site, your connection to that site will be slowed down.   

 Other causes for slow Internet speeds may be related to one or more of the following items:

Adware/Spyware
File Sharing Programs (i.e. LimeWire, KaZaa, Bit Torrent, etc.)
Virus
RF Leakage
Firewalls
Poor Coax Splitter
Routed Networks
VoIP Services
Proxy Server
Radio Frequency
Backbone Fiber Routing
PC Limitations
Low disk space
Browser or browser cache issues
Processor Speed
Wireless Connections
